““You cannot hope to builder a better world without improving the individuals. To that end, each of us must work for our own improvement, and at the same time, share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty to aid those to whom we think we can be most useful.” ”
OUR STORY
Mero Sathi Nepal, “My Friend Nepal,” is a non-profit organization (501(c)3)), formed in 2018, with the mission to promote the well-being of orphans in Nepal through improved nutrition, housing, education and health care. In order to execute our mission, Mero Sathi Nepal is partnered with The Orphans Homes orphanage in Bhaisepati, Nepal. This partnership enables the efficient and expedient transfer of money to directly address the needs of the orphans of Nepal.
The Orphans Homes was established in Bhaisepati, Nepal, in 1991 under the direction of Rita and Nirmal Chandra Rai. Mrs. Rita Rai had a lifelong love for caring for and improving the lives of the many orphans of Nepal. Her husband, Mr. Rai, helped bring her dream to fruition as her partner in the venture, and together they made The Orphans Homes a safe and secure home to children who had been orphaned or brought to them for temporary foster care. At its inception, Orphans Homes took care of seven children. By 1999, they had fifteen children under their care and today, the Rais have grown the orphanage in size and compass and now provide housing, food, education and health care to more than 30 children at one time. Through their efforts, the Rais have cared for over 120 children and have sent over 25 to college and on to become contributing members of society. The Rais have also made it a priority to reunite families when possible and have reunited almost thirty children with their biological families. Additionally, the Rais have made it part of their purpose to protect young girls from the reaches of child slavery and prostitution. Towards that end, they have brought to their home many young girls who were left to live on the streets, rescuing them from a future in slavery to provide them a future of hope and promise.
The survival of The Orphans Homes and so many homes like it, depends largely on the love and support of people who love this small, impoverished country and believe in our responsibility to impact change in this part of the world. There are currently over one million children in Nepal who have been orphaned due to natural disaster, political insurgencies, or temporarily abandoned due to poverty. The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is home to approximately 26 million people, but one of the poorest countries in the world. One child can be clothed, fed, housed and educated for the less than one US meal per week per year. Mero Sathi Nepal is dedicated to making this happen.
